To Build a Fire
Although it is difficult to convey through a still image, this book represents the process of learning to read. The text, Jack London’s “To Build A Fire,” begins in a heap on the bottom of the first page. As the book progresses, the letters and words begin to materialize as they might for a person who is becoming literate. I compare the man’s need to build a fire to survive in the story, to the growing need to be literate to survive in today's high tech world. Text layout was done digitally and the binding was done using a double pamphlet stitch.
